Product Description

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment.

World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to “mindfulness”—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh’s experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. The deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the “mindless” into the mindFUL.

Amazon.com Review

Thich Nhat Hanh''s writing is deceptive in its subtlety. He''ll go on and on with stories about tree-hugging or metaphors involving raw potatoes; he''ll tell you how to eat mindfully, even how to breathe and walk; he''ll suggest looking closely at a flower and to see the sun as your heart. As the Zen teacher Richard Baker commented, however, Nhat Hanh is "a cross between a cloud, a snail, and piece of heavy machinery." Sooner or later, it begins to sink in that Nhat Hanh is conveying a depth of psychology and a world outlook that require nothing less than a complete paradigm shift. Through his cute stories and compassionate admonitions, he gradually builds up to his philosophy of interbeing, the notion that none of us is separately, but rather that we inter-are. The ramifications are explosive. How can we mindlessly and selfishly pursue our individual ends, when we are inextricably bound up with everyone and everything else? We see an enemy not as focus of anger but as a human with a complex history, who could be us if we had the same history. Suffice it to say, that after reading Peace Is Every Step, you''ll never look at a plastic bag the same way again, and you may even develop a penchant for hugging trees. --Brian Bruya

I have read at least a dozen of Thich Nhat Hanh''s books. They are all wonderful, without exception. This one is my favorite. It is a true masterpiece. It is overflowing with gentleness, insight and compassion. I read a few chapters every morning when I pray and meditate and I fall in love again every day.

This may sound rather dramatic and perhaps it is, but I cannot recommend this book enough. I believe it has changed my life.

The three treasures of compassion, simplicity and humility are to be found here in abundance. I do myself a favor every time I read it.

a gentle but persuasive reminder that peace is available to each of us, in every moment; that an inner sense of completeness, serenity can be not only achieved, but sustained...that we can maintain a steady commitment to living with consciousness in spite of the tedium, the antagonizations of modern life.

through short anecdotes, meditations, and stories, hanh encourages us to return, again and again, to the fullness of the present moment. "all around us, how many lures are set by our fellows and ourselves?" hanh asks. "in a single day, how many times do we become lost and scattered because of them?"

protect your fate, your peace, your joy, hanh advises. choose your companions carefully; stand alert, a guard at the gates of your mind.

peace isn''t some future event, hanh reminds us, but something we can access now, by reorienting our relationship to the outer world, to ourselves. begin where you are, he says. breathe. smile. love. it''s simple :)

try not to escape. wash the dishes, walk, answer the phone, eat, and do all of it with an abiding awareness. love in action, he says. settle within yourself and bring each thought into the sunlight of awareness. "in this light," he writes, "no boundary exists between the sacred and the profane."

thank you, thich nhat hanh. five stars.

Whenever anyone asks me, “What have you read lately?” I always lead with “The Art of Communicating” even though I read it months and months ago. No book has affected me the way that one has. Because of that, I was really excited to read Hanh’s Peace Is Every Step, hungry for similarly profound insights and musings. This one never quite lives up to the brilliance of The Art of Communicating, but that is also an unreasonably high standard to set. In a vacuum, this still has a great deal to offer in helping equip the reader to live mindfully.

This one contains a wealth of simple practices that readers can apply immediately. It’s lighter on the philosophy than some of his other books, but it does also contain a lot of really simple and striking practical metaphors to help you shift your perception of some long-standing insecurities and obstacles. It is a beautifully written text, a rallying cry for compassion, and calming balm for the soul. When you’re ready to see the world differently, read this.

I could not get enough of Thich''s books. His mediation technique is fantastic. I am breathing better than before but calmness. I just finished reading "You are Here," such a great book. Even though he is a Buddhist monk, this book is for everyone. I love how he does not push you to be Buddhist but to except love and peace. From time to time, I get so stressed out from work and life, with this book it really helps me bring down my anger, and mediate. I recommend this book to everyone.

Peace is Every Step has helped many of my friends and family members get through rough (or even smooth!) times in their lives. This book is a must-have if you are going through any kind of stressful situation or you are just looking for simple ways to live mindfully. It is organized in very short chapters which are perfect if you want to read one quick chapter a day and then think on it. The messages are easy to understand and provide such accessible wisdom compared to other books of this nature which can be ponderous, new-agey, or overly complicated. My life is better since this book came into my life, and I will never be without a copy.

Excellent book. Fills the mind with compassionate thoughts and encourages the reader to see the world from an empathetic viewpoint. One of my favorite passages is the section called “Nourishing Awareness in Each Moment” (Page 12). This passage in the first few pages sets the tone of the book and tells how mindfulness and meditation can allow us to see everyday experiences from a different perspective.

I have already recommended this book to many of my friends. Now I’m recommending it to you, friend. The reading of this book could be life-changing for someone new to these practices.

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was forced to leave Vietnam during the Vietnam War because of his efforts for peace. He has subsequently lived in France in a retreat known as Plum Village where he continues to write and work for a more peaceful and harmonious world. He has written some 75 books, including Peace is Every Step. In this short (134 pages) work he emphasizes the importance of meditation and describes various ways to meditate. He also focuses on the idea that we are all connected. He says, for example, look at a single sheet of paper. In it you will see the tree it came from, the sun, soil and water that nourished it, the person who cut it down, his family and ultimately yourself. Another theme is that we need to go deep within ourselves to understand our feelings, especially our negative ones. We should look at anger, for example, directly and objectively and not as a result of someone else’s behavior. In this way we can learn how to deal with our anger and channel our feelings in a more positive way. Peace, he says, is in everything we do. The problem in America and Europe is a dualism that puts things and people in opposition to each other. It is only when we see the world as “interbeing,” as interconnected, that we can truly find peace. The book also contains a number of poems and a list of 14 things that you can do to put love into action.

I find this book to be greatly inspiring. As someone who has worked for peace much of my adult life and now feels anger and disappointment at a world that is not at peace, it has great meaning for me. I suggest that you not only read it, but also keep it with you throughout the day so that you can be continually inspired by it.

A must have in this hectic world where we can and do easily lose sight of what is important, this book is a life saver during stressful times and provides us with tools to continue to have ''peace''. I am not someone who usually likes relax nor do I think I have mastered how to, but this is a supportive ''essential'' that you MUST simply purchase as it is invaluable. I found mindfulness to be the reason I am able to reduce the anxiety brought on by demanding work/study/responsibilities... Thich Nhat Hanh has a deeper awareness of achieving inner peace.. survival... you can take from it what you will as there is something for everyone. I know it works and for those studying psychotherapy or have an interest in this area the book is a must read. It is for professionals and those with an interest in self development. I have witnessed mindfulness work [personally and professionally]. The brain is such a diverse mechanism yet this basic way of approaching our minds will help both mind and body to become one in a peaceful place is amazing as you will see the benefits..This needs to be present in therapy... in life... in every individual...

This simple but powerful book explains how we can all achieve peace within ourselves, our relationships and even the world by Simple techniques we can all do. They are so simple and yet so effective it''s difficult to believe it works. But it does. Try doing what he suggests and just feel the tension in you shoulders evaporate in seconds. An amazing and logical practice for everyone and especially for those who suffer from worry, anxiety, and low mood. Experiment when you''re in the car and feeling stressed because you''re late for work or in the middle of a row with your partner etc, The cheapest and simplest way to a healthy mind and body that you could come across. Will the Education Minister please start putting it on the school curriculum to teach the adults of tomorrow how to live stress free and rewarding lives whatever their walk of life and possibilities. It''s when you stop doing it and the tension and stress comes pouring back through your body and mind that you realize how powerful his theories etc are. I would recommend this book to any age group or social background ,and have already sent about 6 to friends and family to help them. But just reading it won''t work, you have to do what he says and it''s just a different way of doing what we do anyway, it''s crazy not to. Good Luck!

This book has helped tremendously with my mindfulness practise. Thich Nhat Hanh reminds the reader that meditation is joyful and beautiful, and extends beyond formal practise into all areas of life. This book helped renew my sense of purpose when meditation was starting to feel like a chore. This is also a wonderful introduction to mindfulness and meditation: clear, humane, secular, written from the heart, and filled with genuinely useful tips and techniques. A few parts come across as a bit hippy-ish, but every word of it is friendly, loving and genuine. Essential reading for anyone interested in mindfulness.
